|Yoshi was pleasantly surprised too.|
This article (The Positive Power of Negative Thinking) put me at ease. I spend so much time and effort telling myself to "think positive, be happy, look on the bright side, smile and don't sweat the small stuff" that I get too preoccupied to enjoy the good stuff. And then when things actually do go wrong I crash hard because I get so disappointed in myself that I wasn't able to keep things afloat with my magical power of thought.
"Hope for the best and expect the worst." Mr. Fiance has been telling me this for years. It's such a logical and relaxing philosophy. If something goes well, then yay! If something goes wrong, well then it's not so bad because it won't be a huge surprise. Instead of reading yourself a positive affirmation that is likely to make you feel like crap later when it doesn't come true, tell yourself "hopefully today is lovely, but shit tends to happen so we'll see."
